Fantastic study of a Hunter in an elegant landscape with a country house in the distance, circle of the renowned equine painter George Stubbs. Oil on canvas, the Painting dates from circa 1790. The size overall is 71 cm x 56 cm (h) whilst the painting is 60 cm x 44 cm In very good condition . Provenance: purchased by the vendor from Henry Wiginton, Shipston-on-Stour in 1969
George Stubbs 1724 – 1806 English painter, best known for his paintings of horses.His most famous work is probably Whistlejacket, a painting of the thoroughbred race horse rising on his hind legs, commissioned by the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, which is now in the National Gallery in London. This and two other paintings carried out for Rockingham break with convention in having plain backgrounds. Throughout the 1760s he produced a wide range of individual and group portraits of horses, sometimes accompanied by hounds. His work can be found in many galleries and National trust houses.
