Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Grace Loftus,of Beverley hall yorkshire.Three-quarter-length, before a window.
Dressed in blue and wearing a white bonnet. The painting is housed in a gilt frame
signed, inscribed and dated 'Jos. Highmore Pinxt/ 1745' ( mid left hand side left, seen under light)
oil on canvas . The size overall being 126 x 152 cm (49.5 x 59.5 inches) whilst the painting is 97 x 118 cm ( 38 x 46.5 inches)
In overall very good condition having been relined, There is some restoration including scattered retouchings/overpainting throughout.
mainly seen under uv light.The frame is in excellent condition. There are labels to the reverse with details of previous restoration 1949
and brief history of sitter (see photos).

Joseph Highmore 1692–1780

Joseph Highmore (13 June 1692 – 3 March 1780) was an English portrait and historical painter, illustrator and author

Highmore attended Sir Godfrey Kneller’s academy in London from 1713. In his early work he adapted Kneller’s style of portraiture to a more realistic style. Highmore was influenced and drew his inspiration from French Rococo artists making his portraits more elegant

Highmore was of a scholarly disposition, and studied the law before taking up painting
Many of his works can be found in National trust houses and various museums.
