19th century antique portrait lady in landscape Godfrey Kneller (manner of)
Fine Portrait of a lady standing in a landscape wearing a white satin dress and holding a posy of flowers. Manner of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) Oil on canvas. The overall size being 136 cm x 162 cm high ( 53 x 63 inches approx) whilst the painting is 100 cm by 125.5 cm high (39.5 x 49 inches high approx) depth 12 cm (approx 4.5 inches) Housed in a gilt frame this is a very large and imposing painting . It is worth mentioning this is also quite a heavy painting , having come from a country estate. The painting is in overall very good condition ready to hang having had some restoration it has been cleaned and relined with some retouching and strengthening. The frame, which is almost certainly the original is in good antique condition. There are some losses to the moldings including 2 of the corner pieces, and some other losses to the edge beading. These areas have been lightly restored, they are coloured correctly to minimise the effect of the losses and the two corner pieces are not detracting from what is a beautiful antique frame.More detailed restoration would in my opinion have detracted from the originality of the piece. More detailed Photos are available on request. An old restoration label is present to the rear of the painting which states address as " Brantinghamthorpe" and a name Maxsted. The "Maxsted's" were once the owners of Brantinghamthorpe hall. Godfrey Kneller Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1st Baronet (born Gottfried Kniller; 8 August 1646 – 19 October 1723) was the leading portrait painter in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and was court painter to English and British monarchs from Charles II to George I.
