19th century seascape oil 'Near Dortrecht Holland' Frederick James Aldridge
19th century, victorian, English marine oil painting, on canvas.Beautiful scene depicting hay barges and dutch fishing craft off the Dutch coast, village and windmill beyond. A rare, professionally composed and confidently executed seascape housed in ornate gilt frame. This painting was specially commissioned by Mr Roberts of Earlswood, Surrey in 1889. Inscribed and titled verso. The painting is also signed and dated lower right. The overall size of the painting is 90 cm x 66 cm whilst the painting is 74 cm x 48 cm The painting and frame are in very good condition,there is no cracking to the varnish and the colours of the paint show clearly. The canvas has not been relined.Has recently been professionally cleaned.
Frederick James Aldridge 19th century victorian artist also working early 20th century. Marine painter almost exclusively in watercolours.Exhibited at the principal London galleries from 1880. He painted very few oil scenes maybe only 1% of all his work making this piece particularly special.
